Press 9 to get another copy of that memo...

What’s worse than not knowing what to press in telephone menu hell? At some point in our lives, everyone’s made the wrong choice. But that’s fine, you can just start over, right? Have you ever made the wrong choice and got chastised by the customer support representative?
I had to call my insurance company, my car had the pleasure of meeting a stray rock on the highway, and I have a large crack in my windshield.
“Press 1 if this is your first time calling us. Press 2 if you have an existing claim number. Press 3 if you are reporting a new claim. Press 4 if you are calling about auto glass repair. Press 5 if….”
Well, it WAS my first time calling. But then I needed glass repair. But what if there was important news for first time callers that I might miss by choosing number 4? But it’s also a new claim.
Before the cold sweats set in, I made my choice. I pressed 1.
“Good afternoon, , may I help you?”
“Yes, this is my first time calling. A stray rock hit my car, and there is a crack a foot and a half long on my front windshield”.
“Weeeeellll, did you take the time to hear the menu option about auto glass repair?”
“Yes, but as it was my first time calling, I figured that should override any other possible choices”.
“Riiiiiiiight. Okay, here’s what you can do….”
I felt like telling him where he could stick his TPS reports. But, no matter how razzed I get, that’s just not my style.

Brian's favorite movie is office space. I could just hear it in your post... :-)
You know, while you're speaking at Admin2003, you'd better have at least 12 pieces of flair. Do you *really* want to do the bare minimum? ;-)
OK, Jess, a couple of things come to mind. First off, someday I do want to get a list of the favorite movies from you and Matt. I know you guys dig "Princess Bride" and "Office Space" - two all-time classics. Another in my book of awesome movies is "So I Murdered An Axe Murderer", and more recently, "Amelie".
Second, on a more serious note, I firmly believe that there is no excuse for bad manners, and that rep was flat out rude. A Customer Service rep is the public face of a company, and I would hope that that individual's manager would be grateful for 2 suggestions for improvement: [1] Change the menu to be more clear; there is no way you were the first one to be flustered by the poor wording; [2] The Customer Service rep needs some coaching!
Wow.
Yeah, I agree Joe. Though I have had my share of superior service, which I may post about soon. Lets' just say it rekindled my faith in customer service!
As for movies, we probably like the same stuff. :-)
If I had to think of some of our favs off the top of our heads, it would be something like...
The Princess Bride
Real Genius
This Is Spinal Tap
Office Space
The NeverEnding Story
And our last two, which are of the more sillier, yet they crack us up and at the same time are borderline genius (satire up the wazoo):
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
Pootie Tang.
:-)
*gasp*
How could I forget The Commitments?
Blasphemy!
Sounds like "A Mighty Wind" might make the list someday as well, Jess. It certainly fits a pattern I'm seeing....
Ah!!!
I haven't seen that one. I actually just found out that there was more movies by the same troupe from Best In Show. So last week I watched Waiting For Guffman...
I think Christopher Guest's talent is SO underrated. I wish he could get more recognition somewhere.
Guffman is the best of Guest's work in my opinion, but i eagerly await the release of "A Mighty Wind" here in the Cleveland area (fortunately we have a preview showing happening in a few days.) but if the soundtrack is any indication, we should all have a good time indeed!
There you are, y'old dog ya! I was beginnin' to wonder. Where'n'the Frankenchrist didja get the blogtitle? Like I needed another way to waste my life on the web....
LOL.. I agree. It was nice to find Brandt again. :-)
Whoa! The mother lode! Shirley and I always have a tough time thinking of movies to rent, and now there's a list (several of which we'd *meant* to see, but never got around to it). That's right, we've NEVER seen:
A Mighty Wind
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
Pootie Tang
Real Genius
The Commitments
This Is Spinal Tap
Waiting For Guffman
(I had to alphabetize the list - my selective anal retention was acting up - of course, we could debate whether to focus on the nouns, rather than 'A', 'The', etc. -- but I digress)
And on the stranger side, anyone else ever see (and totally dig) 'Delicatessen'? :-)
I also must mention our Christmas tradition for many years now: gathering together with family and friends to enjoy some Christmas cheer and watch "Christmas Vacation".
Ooh if you've never seen any of those, your in for a treat. Most of them have incredible dialog. The Commitments is chock full of soul & funk music (killer soundtrack).
And as for my last two silly ones, people either seem to love them or hate them, so no guarantees. :-)
I tried to look up "delicatessen". Was it "Delicatessen", or "delicastessen, story A"?
LOL!! There's two.
Oh, and if you rent Spinal Tap, after you watch the first movie, be sure and watch it again with the commentary. It's 100% in-character, so you're basically getting a second movie out of it that's just as funny as the actual movie.
And I re-read your first comment, My Netflix just sent me Amelie, which was right on top of the queue! Yay...
Jess,
it's just "Delicatessen" which coincidentally was directed by the same director who made Amelie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet.) Of course, now that i've shown off my pretentious film knowledge, i'll just say that i'm totally geeked about seeing X-Men 2 this weekend...
and Stan, creamofbroccoli.org is named after my radio show on WRUW FM 91.1 here in Cleveland on Thursday mornings, the Cream of Broccoli Radio Hour. i've been doing a radio show with that name off and on in several different cities for the better part of 7 years. it just seemed to fit and besides, no one had claimed that domain yet :)
Ah! Now I have to see it.
I just got finished watching Amelie...
It's my new favorite movie!
Wow. That's all I have to say.
