Horse Doves?
Posted by Jess in Geek Humor

I was reading a book the other day, and the word “hors d'oeuvres” came across the page. While reading it, I read it too fast for my brain to process, and I thought “horse”, realized what the word was, and had to go back and start all over again.

That just struck me as so interesting, on two levels. The first being that I thought it was incredibly neat that I actually caught my brain red-handed processing something in a slightly faulty way (though I’m sure the warranty expired LONG ago), and then promptly correcting itself.

The second was that I started thinking how many different ways I have seen and heard that very word pronounced and spelled. Let’s see, first there’s Horse Doves. Then, my favorite, Whores Devores, and we can’t forget Our Doovey’s and Horse Duvrey’s.

Don’t get me started on the spelling. Hors D'evoures, Hors Dourves, Or Derves. Harley Davidson’s?

It’s a homonym nightmare.

I say forget the Hoarse Dovers, just bring me some appetizers, please!

From the Department of Respect... Tonight's episode of CSI:Miami will be shown in every state but Rhode Island. It involves investigation of a nightclub fire caused by pyrotechnics. The fire itself occurs in the episode, not just the aftermath. The episode was apparently filmed over six months ago. I found that highly respectful of CBS.

Not so sure how respectful that is of channel 12. They're under investigation also for the fire - one of their reporters owned the club and was kind of "double dipping" doing a story in his own club. Not the most professional thing to do. Urging the band to "really put on a good show" for the visual video footage to get a better story (which probably encouraged extra special pyro). Also they had one of their cameramen filming the fire instead of helping to rescue innocent victims. And they aired the footage every chance they had for two weeks - footage of people moments before their death or in the process of dying. RI Channel 12 is just practicing a little "CYA" in my opinion. I'm sorry, but I feel very strongly about this since it happened less than a mile from where I grew up and landed 3 of my friends critically injured in the hospital. They could do what every other station would and start the episode with a huge disclaimer, or have Karen Adams introduce the episode with an emotional disclaimer, rather than just pulling the episode and airing the Benefit Concert footage. It just doesn't sit well with me, it feels like an idea from their advertising company to help boost their image and avoid major lawsuits.

I wouldn't call it trying to CYA, it sounds more like "damage control" done by one reporter.

Also, channel 4 WBZ in Boston almost pulled the episode too, but decided not to.

Yeah, the footage pissed me off too. And then all the networks got into "affiliate sharing agreements" about it.

i have issues with not showing something because something else horrible happened. i remember having a conversation with someone a few weeks ago about the Simpsons episode where they go to the WTC and the person i was talking to was shocked they would show that after 9-11. i find this completely silly, as 9-11, while tragic, did not make it so that the WTC never existed. the rhode island club disaster was tragic (and cindy's post is very enlightening--i wasn't aware of the double dip) but it is within the realm of possibility...and CSI shouldn't have to change their programming as a result.

although i don't think we should be congratulating CBS or their affiliate on having any class...the decision is probably purely business related. why create a situation where you piss off your viewers and alienate your advertisers if you don't have to?

See, I'll always be the one to hope for the good intentions before thinking otherwise. Though sadly, I always seem to get proven wrong.

However, Cindy will definately agree with me on this. Complications and plot twists from branches of gov't and corps... it's the Rhode Island way!

Yes, "only in Rhode Island" is a phrase that comes up daily around here. :)

"only in RI does ANY directions that you give someone start out with 'okay, so you get onto 95'"

:-) And "take a right where the old Almacs was, and continue until you hit the old Douglas Drugs..."

"And then take a right at Bess Eaton Donuts. Keep going until the next Bess Eaton Donuts, and take a left. Then, exactly one mile down the road, you will come to another Bess Eaton Donuts. Stop, get a coffee milk, and turn left."
