From the What Were They Thinking Department
Posted by Jess in Day to Day

For Christmas this year, many products I bought as gifts came with rebates. Most of them were special rebates when the item was purchased during a small window of time (such as Dec. 20-24).

When gathering my receipts and finally sitting down to do the rebates, I am stunned in disbelief at the amount that require the original UPC code from the box.

What were they thinking, indeed...

a disturbingly common practice
to help ensure as few people as possible
actually get to receive the rebate.
rebates are,
by and large,
a total scam.

Agreed re the scam aspect of rebates. I've tried now for the past year or more to ignore rebate offers and only buy a product if the price seems attractive without rebate (whether offered or not). I decided that the time and frustration that seemed to be required to track and followup and actually GET the rebates was just not worth it to me.
